This is funky

Well now, this is a new concept and I feel somewhat odd doing it but, Hey why not? As the Inebriated bar tender said to the buxom young country lass!

So whats this Blogging bizz all about?
It seems like a good reason to waffle a bit and tell a computer whats been happening in the world of Scott and Traynor.

Just got back from an awesome weekend of work in Canberra where I was running a Training camp for a Year 9 Girls MTB team. These girls are guns and you should keep an eye on them in the future.
Their aim? To be the first Girls school MTB team to complete the Scott 24hr MTB race to held in Canberra on the 11th and 12th of October.

These girls had not ridden mountain bikes up until a few months ago and are now ready and raring to go after a structured training schedule.
For me this heralds the start of what could be a new era in sustainable outdoor education for our youth and hey why not our middle aged youth! (what do you think Boylie?)

What sparked my passion for teaching people to ride mountain bikes was a question once posed to one of my groups. After a full week on an outdoor ed program where they had experienced a few of the standard activities such as the giant swing and high ropes and a bit of canoing.

I asked them to raise their hand if, 'once they were back at home would they be hanging out with their friends next week on the river in canoes or jumping on the the high ropes course in their back garden'?

As you can imagine the facial expressions from this group of excitable year 9 girls was overall one which begged the question. "whats this bloke with a funny accent on about", "has he gone mad" and concurrently "Monique said that we said that she said that Lauren said that we said that she said...................................................."
Anyway the gist of it was that of all the activities that they had taken part in Mountain Biking was a) the most challenging and enjoyable and b) that it was the only one which was readily available for them to practice at home and hence continue with their learning.
While this study does not fit the rigors of scientific experiment I honestly believe the findings to be quite powerful.
Cycling is a life long sport which one can continue to learn and develop at and provides a vehicle for many of the learning outcomes associated with outdoor ed.

O.k. I am a bike nut!
